The photonic-based point-of-care device will help oncologists make better treatment decisions according to the patient\u2019s needs in a non-invasive manner for cancer diagnosis. Click to tweet <a href=\"http:\/\/ctt.ec\/Pd0bJ\">http:\/\/ctt.ec\/Pd0bJ<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cMost cancer biopsies must be analyzed in specialized laboratories, which involves high costs and long waiting periods, as they require specialised personnel and equipment,\u201d says Izabel Alfany, project coordinator. \u201cThere is therefore a real need and urgency to have new devices that provide diagnosis, prognosis, and data monitoring faster and with exceptional ultra-sensitivity,\u201d says Francesc Mitjans research project director at Leitat Technological Centre.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Specifically, GLAM will design and develop a new diagnostic tool to detect biomarkers from biofluids obtained in a non-invasive manner, focusing on urine and genitourinary cancers. The project will develop an integrated device based on novel label-free photonic biosensors with ultra-sensitivity, simplicity of use, portability, multiplexing and low cost.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Elena Mart\u00ednez, senior researcher at IBEC says: \u201cThe device will make use of the unprecedented sensitivity that can be achieved using laser micro-ring resonators \u2013 devices using the same principle as a whispering gallery, but with light instead of sound.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Last, the unique GLAM technology will have the potential to be used with other types of biofluids, opening the way to the diagnosis and monitoring of other kinds of cancer and many more diseases.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Background<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The GLAM project involves over a 4-year period recognized organisations from all over Europe: <a href=\"http:\/\/leitat.org\/\">Leitat<\/a> (project coordinator), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibecbarcelona.eu\/\">IBEC<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.icfo.eu\/\">ICFO<\/a> (ES), the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.utwente.nl\/en\/\">University of Twente<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radboudumc.nl\/Pages\/default.aspx\">Radboud University Medical Center<\/a> (NL), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wizsoft.com\/\">WizSoft<\/a> (IL), the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ulb.ac.be\/\">Universit\u00e9 Libre de Bruxelles<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/obelis.net\/\">Obelis<\/a> S.A.
