Terrassa, 21th March 2025 \u2013<\/span><\/b> Leitat<\/span><\/b>, a European-accredited technological centre is coordinating the new European project <\/span>PROMISERS<\/span><\/b>. This project is funded by the <\/span>Horizon Europe<\/span><\/b> programme of the <\/span>European Commission<\/span><\/b> with the support of the <\/span>Clean Hydrogen Partnership<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Formed by a consortium of European leaders in industry and research, <\/span>PROMISERS<\/span><\/b> has a duration of three years and a budget close to <\/span>\u20ac3 million<\/span><\/b>. The project\u2019s goal is to develop <\/span>Fluoropolymer-free materials<\/span><\/b> to replace membranes, inks, and other components of <\/span>electrolysers<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>fuel cells<\/span><\/b>, key technologies for the production of clean energy, such as <\/span>hydrogen<\/span><\/b>. The project aims to drive the <\/span>energy transition<\/span><\/b> through more sustainable and environmentally safe solutions.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The consortium members include: <\/span>Syensqo<\/span><\/b>, <\/span>Fumatech<\/span><\/b>, <\/span>De Nora<\/span><\/b>, <\/span>RINA Consulting<\/span><\/b>, <\/span>Hysytech<\/span><\/b>, <\/span>TNO<\/span><\/b>, <\/span>IIT<\/span><\/b>, <\/span>Cellfion<\/span><\/b>, and <\/span>Leitat<\/span><\/b> as coordinator.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

“<\/span>Electrolysers <\/span><\/b>and<\/span> fuel cell <\/span><\/b>applications are fundamental technologies for the<\/span> renewable hydrogen <\/span><\/b>production and the decarbonisation of the economy,<\/span> but we need to develop sustainable alternatives to<\/span> Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances<\/span><\/b> (<\/span>PFAS) <\/span><\/b>substances used in these electrolysers and fuel cells,” states <\/span>Marcel Boerrigter<\/span><\/b>, project coordinator at <\/span>Leitat<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

PFAS<\/span><\/b> encompass a wide group of thousands of synthetic chemical substances that are extensively used across the <\/span>European Union<\/span><\/b> and globally in a wide variety of everyday products. These substances are known for their high stability and ultimately transform into persistent substances, leading to irreversible environmental exposure and accumulation. Due to this accumulation in the environment, they end up and accumulate in human tissues, <\/span>associated with <\/span>adverse health effects.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Nowadays, these <\/span>PFAS<\/span><\/b> substances are widely used in fundamental hydrogen technologies like electrolysers and fuel cells applications. PROMISERS\u2019 objectives are aligned with the European emission reduction targets outlined in the <\/span>EU Hydrogen Strategy<\/span><\/b>, <\/span>REPowerEU<\/span><\/b>, and the <\/span>Green Deal<\/span><\/b> agreement. Additionally, the project is implementing sustainability principles as well as prioritizing safe, scalable, and eco-friendly materials and processes to achieve zero environmental impact.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

PFAS<\/span><\/b> are essential for the manufacturing of hydrogen-related products, especially in <\/span>fuel cells<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>electrolysers. <\/span><\/b>They typically operate with membranes based on these compounds, most commonly <\/span>PFSA<\/span><\/b> (perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acids), such as <\/span>Nafion<\/span><\/b>. This material exhibits excellent conductivity due to its intrinsic microstructure (ion-conductive channels separated by microphases) while being chemically and mechanically robust. Furthermore, this material is widely used in the <\/span>catalyst layer<\/span><\/b>, the <\/span>microporous transport layer<\/span><\/b> located between the electrode and the reactive gas flow field, and the electrodes that form the electrolyser or fuel cell.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Currently, no commercially viable alternative possesses the physical and chemical characteristics as desirable as fluoropolymers. Banning <\/span>PFAS<\/span><\/b> without a suitable replacement would have destructive effects on the <\/span>\u20ac30 billion<\/span><\/b> investment made by the industry over the last decade (only including electrolysers and fuel cells).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Therefore, the development of <\/span>non-fluorinated components<\/span><\/b> (PFAS-free) in the project <\/span>PROMISERS<\/span><\/b>, focusing on fuel cells and electrolysers, will enable the safe and sustainable production of <\/span>renewable hydrogen<\/span><\/b>. This advancement will benefit a wide range of applications, such as <\/span>vehicles<\/span><\/b>, <\/span>electricity generation<\/span><\/b>, and <\/span>industrial processes<\/span><\/b> (steel, cement, and fertilizers), making a significant contribution to the decarbonisation of the European economy.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
