Dynamic Abatement Strategies for maximized environmental and societal health in cities<\/em><\/p>

Abstact:<\/strong><\/p>

Each year, pollution claims thousands of lives across Europe, yet city administrations struggle with limited resources and the need to balance the multiple and uncertain effects of potential solutions. PUREPOLIS<\/strong> is set to transform urban health by pioneering advanced tools that empower policymakers to take high-impact action. At its core, PUREPOLIS drives data-driven, citizen-powered, and science-backed decision-making.\u00a0<\/p>

A breakthrough Citizen Science Application (PR1)<\/strong> will enhance engagement and real-time monitoring. The Near Real-Time Pollution Source Apportionment tool (PR2)<\/strong> and Risk-based Health Impact Assessment framework coupling epidemiology and toxicology approaches (PR3)<\/strong> will precisely link exposure to 35 pollutants and their combination across air, noise, water, and soil to 10 critical health risks, including wellbeing.<\/p>

To maximize the efficiency of Zero Pollution Measures, PUREPOLIS will deploy cutting-edge analysis (PR6)<\/strong> to assess their effectiveness in terms of health, economic, and climate impacts, embracing a complexity perspective. These insights will feed into a Dynamic Abatement Strategies Toolbox (PR7)<\/strong>, ensuring seamless policy integration into co-created, tailored comprehensive strategy for each of the two case studies in France and Spain, optimising co-benefits with multiple policy sectors.<\/p>

PUREPOLIS also pioneers a Vulnerability framework (PR4)<\/strong> and Behaviour framework (PR5)<\/strong> to drive behavioural changes for more successful interventions and foster equitable and sustainable solutions. Beyond core cities in France and Spain, a next-gen Digital Twin (PR8)<\/strong> and policy reports (PR9)<\/strong> will ensure replicability, scalability, and real-world impact across Europe.<\/p>

With nineteen partners from eight countries over thirty-six months<\/strong>, PUREPOLIS is an unprecedented step forward for healthier, more resilient cities. By fusing science, digital innovation, and citizen-driven action, PUREPOLIS sets a new gold standard for pollution mitigation in Europe.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Leitat\u2019s Role in the Project:<\/strong><\/p>

Leitat<\/strong>\u00a0will lead the work towards the development of a tool leveraging AI and existing monitoring systems to attribute pollution levels to specific sources in NRT (near-real-time).<\/p>

Furthermore, Leitat<\/strong>\u00a0will elaborate guidelines for local authorities<\/strong> on prioritizing pollution sources and designing effective ZPM (zero pollution measures) via:<\/p>

  • A detailed handbook<\/strong> outlining methods and guidelines for replicating project solutions in other urban contexts.<\/p><\/li>

  • Setting up a twinning scheme<\/strong> between the case studies and follower cities (Berlin, Augsburg and Rybnik)<\/strong> (WP5).<\/p><\/li>

  • Finally, Leitat will organize a workshop <\/strong>focused on the replication and upscale of outcomes<\/strong> (findings, measures and tools), based on case studies, where follower cities and additional cities will be mobilised by LEITAT and will launch the co-design and launch of the replication and upscaling plan.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/article>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
