{"id":72253,"date":"2025-07-24T07:06:01","date_gmt":"2025-07-24T07:06:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/leitat.org\/?p=72253"},"modified":"2025-07-24T07:24:38","modified_gmt":"2025-07-24T07:24:38","slug":"stackaem-consortium-meeting-at-valfortec-to-continue-progress-on-the-development-of-a-5-kw-aem-electrolyzer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/leitat.org\/en\/blog\/stackaem-consortium-meeting-at-valfortec-to-continue-progress-on-the-development-of-a-5-kw-aem-electrolyzer\/","title":{"rendered":"STACKAEM consortium meeting at Valfortec to continue progress on the development of a 5 kW AEM electrolyzer"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"72253\" class=\"elementor elementor-72253 elementor-72235\" data-elementor-post-type=\"post\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-46425e4c e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"46425e4c\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2e10459a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2e10459a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"113\" data-end=\"391\">On July 8th, Valfortec&#8217;s facilities in Castell\u00f3n de la Plana hosted the fourth follow-up meeting of the <strong>STACKAEM<\/strong> project, an initiative focused on the development of a 5\u202fkW anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyzer, which is key to the sustainable production of green hydrogen.<\/p><p data-start=\"393\" data-end=\"873\">During the meeting, members of the consortium \u2014Kemtecnia, Valfortec, Lurederra Technology Centre, Ochoa Maquinaria, and Leitat\u2014 jointly reviewed the technical progress made since the previous meeting, which took place in March at Leitat\u2019s headquarters in Terrassa (Barcelona). This fourth working session was organized and led by Laura Salv\u00e1, Valfortec\u2019s green hydrogen project manager, who stated that this meeting marks \u201canother big step in steering the project toward success.\u201d<\/p><p data-start=\"875\" data-end=\"1526\">Leitat, as a project partner, presented progress across several activities, including Activity 1, which focuses on the synthesis of <strong>new cathode catalysts and the electrochemical characterization of both cathode and anode catalysts<\/strong>. Results show that the team formed by Sandra Mart\u00ednez, Gerard Mart\u00ed, and Sergi Vilar\u00f3 has developed carbon nanofibers with very promising performance for the cathode. Regarding MEA fabrication, various commercial membranes were evaluated, and one was selected for use in the next phases of the project. Additionally, different GDLs were tested using spray application of anode catalysts, yielding high-potential results.<\/p><p data-start=\"1528\" data-end=\"1878\">As part of Activity 3, Leitat presented the<strong> final stack design<\/strong> with an active area of 100 cm\u00b2 per cell, which is scheduled to be commissioned by the end of this year. The team consisting of Andr\u00e9 Martins, Miguel Gonz\u00e1lez, Pau Bosch, and Marian Garc\u00eda has developed the technical drawings for the stack, enabling operation with this design up to 5\u202fkW.<\/p><p data-start=\"1880\" data-end=\"2053\">Finally, within Activity 5, the team composed of Mart\u00ed Aliaguilla and Inma S\u00e1nchez presented the foundation for the <strong>upcoming life cycle assessment (LCA) of the electrolyzer<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"2055\" data-end=\"2481\">Now at the halfway point of its development, STACKAEM is progressing as planned and is expected to be completed by November 2026.
