At Leitat, a technology centre with over 100 years of history in applied innovation, we reaffirm our commitment to the environment and to researching solutions that reduce the impact of climate change.<\/p><p data-start=\"398\" data-end=\"871\">An example of this commitment is our participation in the European project <strong data-start=\"473\" data-end=\"484\">GREENER<\/strong> (\u201cInteGRated Systems for Effective ENvironmEntal Remediation\u201d), funded by the <strong data-start=\"563\" data-end=\"596\">European Union\u2019s Horizon 2020<\/strong> programme and coordinated by the University of Burgos. This project has developed hybrid, sustainable, and high-performance technologies for the decontamination of soils, sediments, and water, combining <strong data-start=\"800\" data-end=\"827\">advanced bioremediation<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"832\" data-end=\"868\">bioelectrochemical systems (BES)<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"873\" data-end=\"1287\">At Leitat, we have played a key role as scientific leaders in the development and optimisation of BES systems \u2014an innovative technology that uses microorganisms and electricity to remove contaminants such as heavy metals, pesticides, and hydrocarbons. These solutions not only reduce pollution but also generate energy and useful by-products, demonstrating that sustainability and efficiency can go hand in hand.<\/p><p data-start=\"1289\" data-end=\"1572\">Our team has also carried out <strong data-start=\"1319\" data-end=\"1341\">(eco)toxicological<\/strong> assessments to ensure that the processes are safe and beneficial for ecosystems. The results have confirmed that combining BES technologies with traditional bioremediation techniques significantly reduces environmental toxicity.<\/p><p data-start=\"1574\" data-end=\"1844\">The progress achieved in GREENER positions Leitat as a key player in European environmental innovation, showing that applied research can be transformed into real solutions to combat pollution and mitigate the effects of climate change through innovative technologies.<\/p><p data-start=\"1574\" data-end=\"1844\">\u00a0<\/p><p data-start=\"1851\" data-end=\"1881\"><strong>A growing strategic area<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"1883\" data-end=\"2097\">In recent years, Leitat has made a strong commitment to the field of <strong data-start=\"1952\" data-end=\"1993\">Bioelectrochemical Technologies (BES)<\/strong>, which has become one of the main pillars of the <strong data-start=\"2043\" data-end=\"2094\">Circular Economy and Decarbonisation Department<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"2099\" data-end=\"2346\">With <strong data-start=\"2104\" data-end=\"2126\">17 active projects<\/strong> at the European, national, and private collaboration levels, this area has experienced steady growth, incorporating new specialised equipment and expanding its capabilities to address complex environmental challenges.<\/p><p data-start=\"2348\" data-end=\"2782\">Its research focuses on technologies that harness the exchange of electrons between microorganisms and electrodes to improve industrial and environmental processes. This <strong data-start=\"3258\" data-end=\"3270\">48-month<\/strong> project (grant agreement n\u00ba 101060211, under the <strong data-start=\"3320\" data-end=\"3338\">Horizon Europe<\/strong> programme) aims to develop a <strong data-start=\"3368\" data-end=\"3406\">computationally assisted framework<\/strong> for the design and optimisation of <strong data-start=\"3442\" data-end=\"3468\">synergistic biosystems<\/strong> combining bacteria, fungi, and plants for the degradation and sequestration of contaminant mixtures.<\/p><p data-start=\"3573\" data-end=\"4189\">Within BIOSYSMO, Leitat has deepened its research into the <strong data-start=\"3632\" data-end=\"3670\">removal of metals and hydrocarbons<\/strong>. In both cases, alternative methods have been studied to maintain removal performance while reducing the energy and reagent demands of the process. In addition, Leitat contributes to the <strong data-start=\"3858\" data-end=\"3880\">(eco)toxicological<\/strong> evaluation of contaminated and treated samples. The project foresees applications in <strong data-start=\"3966\" data-end=\"3997\">soils, sediments, and water<\/strong>, using both conventional techniques (such as <strong data-start=\"4043\" data-end=\"4063\">phytoremediation<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"4068\" data-end=\"4087\">bioaugmentation<\/strong>) and innovative hybrid ones (<strong data-start=\"4117\" data-end=\"4143\">BES + phytoremediation<\/strong>) for the treatment of contaminant mixtures.<\/p><p data-start=\"4191\" data-end=\"4492\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Through this and other initiatives, Leitat strengthens its commitment to <strong data-start=\"4264\" data-end=\"4292\">environmental innovation<\/strong> and reiterates its conviction that <strong data-start=\"4328\" data-end=\"4359\">international collaboration<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"4361\" data-end=\"4385\">cutting-edge science<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"4391\" data-end=\"4411\">applied research<\/strong> are essential to building a greener and healthier planet for future generations.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a context of global climate emergency, every technological advance towards a more sustainable future is essential.
