Together with our partner <strong data-start=\"2248\" data-end=\"2259\">Sorigu\u00e9<\/strong>, we are pleased to announce the publication of our latest research in the <em data-start=\"2334\" data-end=\"2371\">Journal of Environmental Management<\/em>. This work is part of the <strong data-start=\"2398\" data-end=\"2423\">Water Harmony project<\/strong>, which seeks to advance sustainable, efficient, and scalable wastewater treatment solutions.<\/p><p><strong>\u201cBiocidal and photocatalytic nanofibre systems for tertiary wastewater treatment: from lab to pilot scale\u201d<\/strong><\/p><p>Authored by researchers from <strong data-start=\"2665\" data-end=\"2687\">Leitat and Sorigu\u00e9<\/strong>: Rub\u00e9n Rodr\u00edguez-Alegre, Mar\u00eda Uriburu-Gray, Rosa Mar\u00eda Rafecas, Zulema Borjas Hern\u00e1ndez, Carlos Andecochea Saiz, Xialei You, Beatriz Corzo, Sonia Matencio, Diego Morillo and Marcel Boerrigter.<\/p><p data-start=\"2885\" data-end=\"3084\">The study presents the development and validation of a <strong data-start=\"2940\" data-end=\"2986\">modular electrospun nanofibre-based system<\/strong> for <strong data-start=\"2991\" data-end=\"3033\">advanced tertiary wastewater treatment<\/strong>, integrating two complementary functional modules:<\/p><ul data-start=\"3086\" data-end=\"3327\"><li data-start=\"3086\" data-end=\"3194\"><p data-start=\"3088\" data-end=\"3194\">A <strong data-start=\"3090\" data-end=\"3132\">biocidal nanofibre module (PAN\/silver)<\/strong>, for efficient microbial inactivation and pathogen control.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"3195\" data-end=\"3327\"><p data-start=\"3197\" data-end=\"3327\">A <strong data-start=\"3199\" data-end=\"3250\">photocatalytic nanofibre module (PVDF-HFP\/TiO\u2082)<\/strong>, for the degradation of organic contaminants, including emerging pollutants.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"3329\" data-end=\"3534\">This modular design allows each treatment function to be optimised independently while operating as part of an integrated system, providing flexibility and adaptability to different treatment requirements.<\/p><p data-start=\"3536\" data-end=\"3932\">A key strength of this work is its <strong data-start=\"3571\" data-end=\"3621\">successful scale-up and pilot-scale validation<\/strong>. Beyond lab testing, the nanofibre system was implemented in a <strong data-start=\"3685\" data-end=\"3730\">real municipal wastewater treatment plant<\/strong>, achieving <strong data-start=\"3742\" data-end=\"3781\">high <em data-start=\"3749\" data-end=\"3758\">E. coli<\/em> removal efficiencies<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"3786\" data-end=\"3843\">significant degradation of model organic contaminants<\/strong>, confirming the robustness and effectiveness of the technology in real-world conditions.<\/p><p data-start=\"3934\" data-end=\"4296\">The findings highlight the potential of <strong data-start=\"3974\" data-end=\"4009\">function-specific nanomaterials<\/strong>, integrated at system level, to overcome traditional barriers to scale-up.
