The Horizon Europe<\/strong> project PROMISERS<\/strong> successfully hosted its Open Exploitation & Innovation Workshop<\/strong> at the facilities of FUMATECH BWT GmbH<\/strong> in Bietigheim-Bissingen, Germany<\/strong>, bringing together experts from industry, research organisations, academia, policy bodies and European projects to discuss the future of PFAS-free technologies for hydrogen applications<\/strong>.<\/p>

The event provided a valuable platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration<\/strong>, focusing on one of the most pressing challenges facing the hydrogen sector: the development of sustainable alternatives to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)<\/strong> used in fuel cells and electrolysers.<\/p>

Advancing Sustainable Solutions for the Hydrogen Sector<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>

PFAS-based materials<\/strong> are widely used in key electrochemical technologies, including proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs)<\/strong> and proton exchange membrane electrolysers (PEMELs)<\/strong>, due to their high performance and durability. However, growing environmental concerns and evolving regulatory requirements are increasing the need for safer and more sustainable alternatives<\/strong>.<\/p>

In response to this challenge, PROMISERS<\/strong> is developing innovative PFAS-free membrane technologies and components<\/strong> capable of delivering high performance while reducing environmental impact and supporting the long-term sustainability of hydrogen technologies.<\/p>

    Bringing Together Europe’s Hydrogen Innovation Community<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>

    The workshop attracted experts from leading organisations across the hydrogen and membrane technology sectors, including FUMATECH BWT GmbH, Syensqo, TNO, Johnson Matthey, TU Graz, CNR, Newcastle University, ionysis GmbH<\/strong>, and the European Environment Agency (EEA)<\/strong>.<\/p>

    The event also strengthened collaboration with other Horizon Europe<\/strong> initiatives working on complementary challenges, such as IRION, ECOPEM<\/strong> and SUSTAINCELL<\/strong>, promoting knowledge exchange and identifying opportunities for future cooperation.<\/p>
