Leitat is recognized by the Fédération Internationale de l ‘Automobile (FIA) to certify protective clothing for drivers and mechanics, verifying compliance with FIA 8856-2018 and FIA 8867-2016 regulations before marketing. Nationally, we are the only laboratory with this distinction and one of the few trained to do so globally.

FIA homologation is the official process certifying that a product meets the requirements established by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) for the relevant protective equipment. Homologation verifies that protective clothing intended for certain competitions meets the safety standards established by the FIA before it is marketed and used, where required by the applicable regulations.
Leitat is recognised by the FIA to evaluate and certify protective clothing for drivers and mechanics. FIA Standard 8856-2018 sets out the requirements for drivers’ protective clothing, while FIA Standard 8867-2016 applies to protective clothing for mechanics intended for use outside racing periods. The latter consists of a jacket and trousers and provides protection against heat and flames. Leitat is also recognised to perform tests in accordance with Standard 8877:2022 for kart drivers. Leitat is the only laboratory in Spain recognised by the FIA for this activity and one of the few internationally with this capability.
Leitat’s FIA Homologation Department, supported by its laboratories accredited under ISO/IEC 17025, can issue homologation, re-homologation and review certificates for products within the scope of its FIA recognition. These certificates form part of the homologation and validation process for products intended for drivers and mechanics.
Leitat evaluates protective clothing through the tests and checks established by the applicable FIA standards. Its laboratories, accredited under ISO/IEC 17025, carry out the necessary evaluations, and Leitat’s FIA Homologation Department issues the corresponding documentation for the FIA homologation and validation process. The procedure and requirements depend on the type of product and the applicable standard.
