FUNTEX

Safe by design (bi)functional technical textiles

Abstract:

The FUNTEX project aims to develop a new generation of safer functional textiles that combine fluorine-free water and oil repellency, flame retardancy, and antimicrobial properties for upholstery and workwear applications. Current solutions rely on perfluorinated substances, halogenated compounds, and silver nanoparticles, all of which pose environmental and health risks such as persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity. Moreover, no textiles currently offer both water and oil repellency and flame retardancy simultaneously, as these functionalities interfere with each other, preventing compliance with standards.

To address these challenges, FUNTEX adopts a Safe-by-Design approach to minimize risks during the design phase. The project will develop functional additives based on functionalized nanoparticles and microcapsules, integrate them into textile finishing formulations, and validate their performance. The consortium, including Lurederra, Leitat, E.Cima, and INM, will collaborate on material development, process optimization, and pilot-scale application.

The work plan consists of four main activities: defining requirements and selecting safe materials, developing functional additives, creating and testing formulations, and building a pilot-scale prototype to demonstrate scalability. Safety assessments will cover potential impacts on workers, consumers, and the environment throughout the product lifecycle. With a budget of €1,088,864, FUNTEX seeks to deliver innovative, sustainable solutions that meet market demands while reducing chemical and environmental risks.
