On 4–5 September, the HIBISCUS project officially kicked off at the coordinator’s facilities, SOPREMA, in Strasbourg. During the meeting, partners reviewed project activities, established the monitoring methodology, and visited SOPREMA’s installations. As leader of Work Package 2 (WP2), Leitat presented its tasks and responsibilities, highlighting its key role in the consortium.
About HIBISCUS
Funded by the CBE JU with €7.5 million and involving 12 partners across 6 countries, HIBISCUS is developing five new bio-based construction materials for waterproofing, insulation, and carpentry. These solutions will contain up to 80% bio-based content, while offering enhanced durability, mould resistance, and fire protection.
Expected impacts
- Five bio-based products with 25% lower CO₂ emissions and 20% energy savings compared to fossil-based benchmarks
- Up to 80% bio-based content in construction solutions
- 10% market share for bio-based construction materials within five years
- €50 million in annual revenues by 2039 and the creation of 200 new jobs in the sector
- Strengthened EU economies with €120 million boost through local feedstock sourcing and reduced import dependency
- Deployment in 10,000 EU buildings, cutting emissions by 40% and fossil reliance by 15%
With these outcomes, HIBISCUS will make a significant contribution to the sustainability and competitiveness of the European construction sector.
