Leitat drives the new generation of batteries for electric vehicles with the European project AM4BAT, funded with €4.8 million.
More efficient, safe and sustainable batteries, with higher energy density and advanced materials to reduce environmental impact and facilitate recycling.
- Terrassa as a hub of innovation, with the project integrated into the campaign “In Terrassa, innovation has a face and eyes” to bring R&D&I closer to citizens.
The Leitat technology centre, based in Terrassa, leads the European project AM4BAT, with a budget of €4.8 million, aimed at developing a new generation of solid-state, anode-free batteries with higher energy density, specifically designed for electric vehicles.
The initiative seeks to respond to the exponential growth in battery demand and the pressure on the automotive industry to meet the European Union’s decarbonisation targets without losing competitiveness.
This new battery aims to offer high energy storage capacity, improving its energy density to compete with current batteries. The manufacturing process will use advanced materials to optimise performance, while also exploring more sustainable alternatives to reduce environmental impact.
The project includes the development of battery prototypes that will undergo a series of tests to evaluate their viability and efficiency. A detailed analysis will also be carried out on how these batteries can be manufactured in an economical way and with minimal environmental impact, while considering the recycling of the materials once the batteries reach the end of their life cycle.
The Leitat technology centre, based in Terrassa, coordinates the AM4BAT project together with 4 SMEs, 3 research and technology organisations (RTOs), 2 universities and 2 major industries, contributing the expertise needed for the development of this innovative battery: from the synthesis of materials, their modification, formulation and scaling, to the printing of components and the assembly of cells, with the ultimate goal of helping to build a European value chain for the manufacturing of sustainable batteries. The project seeks to overcome current technological challenges and lay the foundations for the production of next-generation batteries in Europe, thus contributing to the energy transition and the future of electric mobility.

This project was one of the 10 selected to be part of the campaign launched by the City Council, “In Terrassa, innovation has a face and eyes,” with the aim of promoting innovation, positioning Terrassa as an innovative city throughout the national territory, bringing innovation closer to citizens, and highlighting the companies that innovate, the research groups, and the areas of knowledge that support the local business fabric.
This campaign is led by the Services of Innovation, Universities and Knowledge Transfer of the Terrassa City Council and is funded by the Barcelona Provincial Council. The goal of the campaign is to position Terrassa as a hub of innovation, give visibility to cutting-edge R&D&I projects, and bring them closer to citizens through podcasts, videos, and social media.
