UpSurge M36 meeting at Queen’s University Belfast, UK

The UPSURGE project consortium gathered from 18–20 September 2024 at Queen’s University Belfast, UK, for its 36-month follow-up meeting.

The UPSURGE consortium reunited to review the advancements made over the past six months across all work packages. Partners presented updates on the implementation of nature-based solutions (NBS) in the demo cities, highlighting successful interventions like Katowice’s green bus stops and Budapest’s rain gardens, as well as the challenges encountered.

Progress in deploying and analyzing data from the sensor systems, alongside enhancements in digital tools and mobile applications, was also discussed. Focus was given to regenerative assessment activities, including ecosystem service evaluation and spatial planning to support NBS uptake. The Clearinghouse platform was showcased as a key knowledge and advisory resource for cities pursuing regenerative urban development.

The meeting concluded with discussions on dissemination efforts and plans to maximize the project’s impact moving forward.

During the meeting, Leitat shared progress on assessing nature-based solutions for air quality and climate neutrality, including developing a registry of these solutions. The team also contributed to the broader regenerative assessment work, involving multiple partners focusing on CO₂ uptake and ecosystem services in cities. These efforts support the project’s goal of fostering urban regenerative transitions.

Beyond the working sessions, the consortium members visited the Belfast Demonstration Site and enjoyed a networking dinner at the Great Hall, Queen’s University Belfast.
