From December 9th to 12th, 2024, the 17 partners of the BATRAW project gathered at the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) in Brussels, Belgium.
The meeting focused on advancing sustainable battery recycling through two pilot systems.
The first pilot, based in Pamplona (Spain), is developing semi-automated processes for dismantling battery packs, achieving 95% component recovery and enabling cell and module reuse. The second pilot, located in Bessines-sur-Gartempe (France), is scaling mechanical pre-treatment and hydrometallurgical recycling processes to efficiently separate and recover critical raw materials with 90-98% selectivity.
Discussions covered project management, risk assessments, sustainability strategies, and innovations in disassembly and recycling. A policy event explored the environmental and social impacts of lithium-ion batteries, complemented by high-level conferences on EU battery supply chains and circular economy strategies.
During the meeting, Leitat showcased progress on its cutting-edge human-robot collaborative workstation for the semi-automated dismantling of EV battery packs, a key contribution to optimizing the recovery of battery components and supporting the development of sustainable recycling processes.
Beyond the technical sessions, consortium members attended the Raw Materials Week 2024 and the Materials for Batteries Hub event, focused on securing battery raw materials from European resources.
