Bio-based Polymers for New Sustainable Water-Soluble Sheets
Abstract:
The BIOWASHEETS project aims to innovate in the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector by developing sustainable water-soluble sheets designed for everyday applications such as personal care and household cleaning. The main objective is to replace fossil-based PVA, widely used as the base polymer, with more sustainable alternatives while maintaining the required technical properties (water solubility, mechanical strength, etc.).
The project will explore three approaches to achieve this replacement: using plant-based PVA, substituting with natural polymers, and developing chemically modified natural polymers. Additionally, the production process will be optimized to reduce energy consumption by adjusting polymer dissolution conditions and the drying system.
BIOWASHEETS also aims to extend water-soluble sheet technology to new personal care and household products, promoting incremental innovation with a positive environmental impact. The project is aligned with the European Green Deal, the sustainability strategies of AISE and Cosmetics Europe, and contributes to the objectives of the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan (PRTR).
Through the collaboration between Natulim as an industrial company and Leitat as a technology center, BIOWASHEETS will foster the transfer of scientific knowledge and the development of sustainable processes applicable in the FMCG sector, addressing current sustainability and environmental responsibility challenges.
