Leitat accredited to verify companies’ energy savings and strengthens its commitment to decarbonisation

  • Energy Savings Certificates (CAE) make it possible to certify companies’ energy savings, i.e. the energy they no longer consume thanks to efficiency improvements
  • The oldest technological centre in Europe, celebrating its 120th anniversary this year, is now among the 12 entities authorised in Spain to verify energy savings with technical rigour and traceability
  • Leitat will be able to verify standardised actions and contribute to building trust in the Energy Savings Certificate system

Reducing energy consumption is no longer only a matter of efficiency, but also of being able to demonstrate it with guarantees. In this context, Leitat has obtained accreditation from the Entidad Nacional de Acreditación (ENAC) as a verification body for the Energy Savings Certificate (CAE) system for standardised actions (19/VV036). This enables Leitat to verify, with technical guarantees and independence, the energy savings generated by companies and to contribute to the deployment of this key mechanism for decarbonisation.

With this accreditation, the technological centre becomes part of the select group of 12 entities authorised in Spain to perform this function.

Energy Savings Certificates (CAE) are a system that recognises and quantifies the energy that a company no longer consumes thanks to improvements in its processes or facilities. These savings can be certified and converted into economic value within the system, encouraging investment in energy efficiency. In addition, this system allows verified energy savings to generate an economic return for companies, helping them recover part of their investment in energy efficiency.

This recognition positions Leitat as a relevant player within the CAE system, an instrument designed to promote energy efficiency through the certification of savings derived from specific actions. Independent verification of these savings is critical to ensure the reliability of the system, reduce uncertainty and build trust among all stakeholders.

Technical rigour and independence to ensure system reliability

Accreditation as a verification body allows Leitat to assess the correct application of energy savings calculation methodologies in standardised actions, ensuring data consistency, quality of evidence and traceability of records. In simple terms, it means verifying with data that the energy savings declared by a company are real and can be demonstrated. The centre’s added value lies in the combination of technological capability and applied knowledge in energy efficiency, together with its status as an independent, non-profit organisation—factors that reinforce the objectivity of the verification process.

In this regard, Leitat’s experience in innovation projects, energy audits, applied engineering, and measurement and verification processes—aligned with international standards such as the International Performance Measurement and Verification Protocol (IPMVP)—provides a solid and reliable approach to the system.

This accreditation strengthens our ability to guarantee the reliability and robustness of certified energy savings. The CAE system requires technical rigour, traceability and independence, and at Leitat we bring these values to generate trust and confidence among all stakeholders,” says Marta Escamilla, Area Manager of Sustainability within the Circular Economy and Decarbonisation Department.

A new service to boost business competitiveness and sustainability

Accreditation as a CAE verification body represents a step forward in Leitat’s strategy to support companies in achieving their sustainability and competitiveness goals. This new service expands the technological centre’s portfolio, which already includes areas such as decarbonisation, carbon footprint calculation, life cycle analysis (LCA), and the development of applied R&D solutions aimed at improving energy efficiency.

With this new capability, Leitat strengthens its positioning as an end-to-end technological partner, able to support companies from identifying energy-saving opportunities and developing R&D&I solutions to the accredited verification of the results obtained.

Accreditation as a CAE verification body represents a step forward in Leitat’s strategy to support companies in achieving their sustainability and competitiveness goals,” says Olga Bonastre, Director of Quality at Leitat.

120 years of innovation serving industry

The launch of this service coincides with the celebration of Leitat’s 120th anniversary, making it the oldest technological centre in Europe.

This new accreditation reinforces Leitat’s role as a key player in the energy transition, providing knowledge, technical capacity and guarantees in an increasingly relevant field for industry.

Throughout its history, Leitat has consolidated its role as a key agent in knowledge and technological transfer to the business sector, contributing to improving companies’ competitiveness and driving innovation in strategic sectors. In this context, the ability to verify energy savings becomes a key element for industrial competitiveness.
