- The technology center presents innovations in personalized nutrition, new proteins and digitalization to move towards a more sustainable, safe and efficient food industry
- The congress on innovation in the food industry is held from May 13 to 15 at the Bilbao Exhibition Centre
With the slogan “Feeding innovation”, Leitat participates from 13 to 15 May in the international Food4Future congress as a global partner, which takes place at the Bilbao Exhibition Centre in the capital of Biscay, thus reaffirming its leadership in the progress towards a more sustainable, safe and efficient model of the food industry through science and technology.

The center will show during these days at its stand a selection of the most advanced projects in nutrition, health and food 4.0, developed from the laboratory of Vilanova del Camí. These are outstanding proposals linked to the personalization of food, new proteins, vegetable food, bio-active ingredients, food safety or the digitalization of food processes, among others. These will be the prototypes that the technology center will present at Food4Future:
- Frankfurt-type sausages with insect protein, as a sustainable meat alternative within the SUSINCHAIN project. The technological and sensory functionality of insect flours in alternative meat products has been designed, characterized and validated.
- 3D printed cookies, adapted to personalized nutrition for population groups such as the elderly, children or people with special needs, within the framework of the 3DFOODEVOLUTION project. 3D printing technologies have been applied with sensory and nutritionally adequate products.
- Functional ingredients from marine by-products, within the INNOAQUA project. Leitat has managed to establish a viable technology for obtaining functional ingredients, highly soluble and with a high protein content.
- Functional black chocolate with probiotics, oriented to improve digestive health and guaranteeing the viability of microorganisms and their stable incorporation into lipid matrices.
- Photonic technology to detect microplastics in real time, linked to the ASTRAL project. Leitat has contributed to developing an innovative system for continuous detection, using photonic technologies and artificial intelligence. This approach improves precision and efficiency in identification and quantification.
- Food by-products through insects, within the framework of the INSECTUM project. Leitat has collaborated with other companies in the evaluation of the potential of several insects to evaluate agri-food by-products and transform the insect biomasa obtained into ingredients of high added value.
- Functional extracts of microalgae, incorporated in snacks as an example of circular biorefinery, belonging to the REDWine project. This focuses on assessing the residual currents of the wine industry.

In addition, in addition to this exhibition, Leitat participates in the official agenda with the session “Feeding innovation”, on May 13, where the manager of the International Leitat Area, Joan Roig, will show the success stories and strategic lines that point towards a healthier and more sustainable diet, supported by technology. However, Montse Jorba, director of the Biorrecursos and Agri-Food Technologies area will participate in the round table “Ingredients (and supplements) of a new generation”, on May 14 in the Auditorium ‘FONTAREL NEXT H2.0’; and Àlvar Gracia, senior researcher of Leitat, will participate on the last day of the congress in the round table “Innovations in personalized and functional nutrition”.
The technological transition towards a more innovative and sustainable food industry
Food 4 Future is a unique event where innovation, sustainability and digitalization converge to shape the future of the food industry. The congress will bring together more than 8,000 professionals from the entire agri-food value chain, and will allow to discover the latest innovations designed to automate and digitize the production plants of the industry, as well as developments in packaging, packaging and logistics.
