On Revolució 4.0, on Catalunya Ràdio, Pau Bosch, Principal Researcher in the Bioelectrochemical Technologies area, explains the role renewable hydrogen can play in the energy transition and why it is set to become a key technology in the shift towards a lower-emission economy.
During his conversation with Xantal Llavina, Pau explains in an accessible way how renewable hydrogen is produced using electricity from renewable energy sources and how it can contribute to progressively replacing grey hydrogen, which currently still accounts for the majority of global hydrogen production.
The interview also focuses on one of the major challenges associated with this technology: ensuring that the materials and processes required to produce hydrogen become more sustainable. In this context, Pau presents projects such as PROMISERS, which is developing alternatives to membranes containing fluorinated compounds currently used in some electrolysers, with the aim of reducing their environmental impact.
Pau also highlights the potential of hydrogen to strengthen a European energy value chain that is less dependent on third countries, as it can be produced locally using renewable electricity. At the same time, he points out that hydrogen should complement other solutions: directly electrifying processes wherever possible and prioritising hydrogen for industrial processes or applications that are more difficult to electrify.
