As Alimentaria Barcelona 2026 comes to a close, the valorisation of by-products is emerging as a key driver towards a more sustainable agri-food system. In this context, Principal Researcher of the Bioresources and Agroalimentary Technologies group Irina Chiriac, from the technology centre Leitat, highlighted in Revista Campo how transforming agricultural waste into new resources can generate value beyond traditional food production.
Through biorefinery technologies and crop digitalisation, it is possible not only to optimise production, but also to identify new applications for by-products, from food and cosmetic ingredients to bioenergy solutions. This approach enables full use of each crop, reduces waste, and opens up new business opportunities for the agricultural sector, in line with the solutions showcased during the fair.
