LEITAT, along with all the partners of the SMARTPRO project, met at the Amalia Hotel Athens in Athens (Greece) on the 7th of May 2014 for the project’s kick-off meeting.
The multidisciplinary consortium of the SmartPro project, titled “Lightweight, flexible and smart protective clothing for law enforcement personnel”, focuses on the development of lightweight and smart protective clothing incorporating advanced functionalities, specifically designed for law enforcement personnel. SmartPro aims to develop optimized ballistic textiles (both woven and spacer knitted fabrics) and apply innovative surface treatments (e.g., shear thickening fluids, ceramic coatings) to improve performance on an areal density basis. Fewer fabric layers will be required, leading to increased flexibility and reduced weight of the armor. Key parameters to consider include physiological comfort and ergonomic design.
Additionally, smart functions, such as positioning systems, will be integrated to enhance the efficiency of the body armor, ultimately leading to reduced casualties. Innovative solutions are also being proposed for the protection of vulnerable body parts beyond the torso.
