Modification of silica with bio-based compounds for its use as a reinforcing filler in tires
The BIOBASADOS-MS project aims to develop a new methodology for producing biologically derived modified precipitated silica, with the goal of improving the mechanical properties of rubber used in tires (such as wear resistance, wet traction, and low rolling resistance) and replacing petroleum-derived additives, while meeting the sustainability and safety requirements of both industry and consumers.
Currently, precipitated silica is a key component for replacing carbon black; however, the available modifiers do not fully meet industry requirements, particularly in regulated sectors such as the automotive industry.
The main challenge of the project is to achieve the hydrophobization of silica using bio-based modifiers in order to improve its dispersion within the rubber matrix, thereby optimizing its performance.
