Leitat participated in the 5th RecAL Consortium Meeting (CM5), hosted by UNIMORE and AIT-LKR in Modena, Italy, from 1 to 3 September 2026. The meeting brought together the RecAL consortium for three days of technical discussions, strategic planning, and collaborative workshops focused on advancing circularity and sustainability within the aluminium value chain.
The RecAL project aims to accelerate the circularity of the aluminium value chain by improving sorting and material characterisation, increasing the traceability of secondary aluminium streams, and developing new recycled-content alloys. These innovations contribute to higher-quality aluminium recycling and more effective upcycling solutions for European industry.
The consortium reviewed the progress achieved during the second project period and aligned on the key activities required to ensure the timely delivery of upcoming milestones, deliverables, and reporting obligations. Particular attention was given to preparations for the end of Project Period 2, including deliverable monitoring, risk mitigation measures, and planning activities for the final phase of the project.
Leitat, as leader of activities related to advanced sorting technologies, contributed to discussions on optical-based material identification, cleaning processes for sample characterisation, economic feasibility of industrial sorting solutions, and data-driven approaches supporting circular aluminium processes. The meeting also provided an opportunity to address key technical challenges, including sample preparation requirements, measurement methodologies, and pathways towards large-scale industrial deployment. These developments support the project’s objective of improving the quality and traceability of recycled aluminium streams.
