Analysis and Optimisation of Water Use in the Tourism Sector
Abstract:
The HIDROTUR project aims to analyse and optimise water use in the tourism sector, an area of particular importance in the current context of recurring droughts and the growing need to move towards more sustainable management models. The initiative seeks to generate robust knowledge on water consumption patterns across different types of tourism establishments, as well as on the perceptions and practices of the various stakeholders involved in water management.
The project’s main added value lies in combining real water consumption data, surveys of tourism establishments and visitors, and fieldwork to provide a comprehensive and evidence-based understanding of water use within the sector. This approach enables the identification of opportunities for improvement, highlights existing good practices, and supports the development of practical recommendations for more efficient and sustainable water resource management.
As part of the project, a pilot study is being carried out in the municipality of Lloret de Mar to validate the methodology in a real-world setting and generate lessons that can be transferred to other tourist destinations. Expected outcomes include a detailed diagnosis of water use, a better understanding of consumption patterns and perceptions, and a set of recommendations aimed at improving resource efficiency and enhancing the sustainability of the tourism sector.
Overall, HIDROTUR represents a commitment to sustainable water management in tourism by promoting data-driven decision-making, fostering collaboration among sector stakeholders, and developing tools that contribute to the resilience and sustainability of tourist destinations.
