Leitat participates in the Water Sensitive City Action Plan to help build more water-resilient cities

The Water Sensitive City (WSC) Action Plan, developed within the framework of the Urban Agenda for the European Union, has been officially endorsed following the Urban Development Group (UDG) meeting on 25 September, once the public consultation process had been completed and the feedback received had been incorporated.

The plan connects European water resilience goals with local implementation to help cities of different sizes address challenges such as flooding, drought, water scarcity and declining water quality. Through seven complementary actions, it aims to integrate water into urban planning, promote water retention and efficient use, and facilitate reuse. It also seeks to restore the natural water cycle and reduce runoff, contributing to improving the urban environment and its adaptation to climate change.

Within this initiative, Leitat leads Action 6, dedicated to Knowledge and Capacity Building, which aims to support local and regional authorities in applying water-sensitive urban approaches.

This action includes the development of a Good Practices Compendium, as well as targeted capacity-building materials and activities. These resources will be designed to share experiences and knowledge and facilitate their application in urban management and planning.

To address these objectives, the plan combines the definition of water management indicators, the identification of regulatory improvements, urban planning, innovative financing, the digitalisation of water systems, capacity building and community engagement.

Through its participation in the Water Sensitive City Action Plan, Leitat contributes to transferring knowledge and water management solutions to the local level, helping cities and public authorities move towards more resilient, efficient and climate-adapted urban models.
