The Horizon Europe project PROMISERS successfully hosted its Open Exploitation & Innovation Workshop at the facilities of FUMATECH BWT GmbH in Bietigheim-Bissingen, Germany, bringing together experts from industry, research organisations, academia, policy bodies and European projects to discuss the future of PFAS-free technologies for hydrogen applications.
The event provided a valuable platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration, focusing on one of the most pressing challenges facing the hydrogen sector: the development of sustainable alternatives to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) used in fuel cells and electrolysers.
Advancing Sustainable Solutions for the Hydrogen Sector
PFAS-based materials are widely used in key electrochemical technologies, including proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) and proton exchange membrane electrolysers (PEMELs), due to their high performance and durability. However, growing environmental concerns and evolving regulatory requirements are increasing the need for safer and more sustainable alternatives.
In response to this challenge, PROMISERS is developing innovative PFAS-free membrane technologies and components capable of delivering high performance while reducing environmental impact and supporting the long-term sustainability of hydrogen technologies.
Throughout the workshop, participants explored the latest developments, challenges and opportunities related to the transition towards PFAS-free solutions.

The workshop attracted experts from leading organisations across the hydrogen and membrane technology sectors, including FUMATECH BWT GmbH, Syensqo, TNO, Johnson Matthey, TU Graz, CNR, Newcastle University, ionysis GmbH, and the European Environment Agency (EEA).
The event also strengthened collaboration with other Horizon Europe initiatives working on complementary challenges, such as IRION, ECOPEM and SUSTAINCELL, promoting knowledge exchange and identifying opportunities for future cooperation.
These interactions highlighted the importance of cross-sector collaboration in accelerating innovation and supporting the development of sustainable technologies for the European hydrogen ecosystem.
