The consortium of SURPASS – Safe, Sustainable, and Recyclable-by-Design Polymers, coordinated by Leitat Technological Center and composed of 13 partners, met on June 4–5, 2024, in Ludwigshafen and Karlsruhe (Germany) for the project’s M24 meeting.
The two-day gathering focused on evaluating progress and planning the next steps in the development of innovative SSRbD polymer materials.
Day 1 included updates on the current landscape analysis for SSRbD polymers, which is close to completion, and on the development of new materials such as:
- Bio-sourced alternatives for construcion
- Recyclable composites for the transport sector
- Improved films for packaging applications
There was also progress in building digital tools and infrastructures to support sustainable design and evaluation.
Day 2 was dedicated to sustainability strategies, case study reviews, and discussions on testing, risk management, and project-wide planning. These sessions helped refine the approach and accelerate the project’s contribution to circular polymer innovation.
During the meeting, Leitat presented its progress on a Safe, Sustainable, and Recyclable-by-Design polyurethane (PU) matrix. They also shared early results from reprocessing trials and discussed next steps like mold adjustments and mechanical testing.
Beyond the technical sessions, participants visited the BASF facilities and the Fraunhofer ICT Institute, providing further insight into industrial practices and research capabilities.
