GIGA-3

Digitalisation of the Omega-3 oil purification process using a supercritical CO₂ column

Abstract:

GiGa-3 aims to digitalise and optimise the production of triglycerides (TG) using supercritical CO₂ in a pilot plant operated by BrudyTech, in collaboration with Leitat. The project will implement online sensors and artificial intelligence-based predictive control models to reduce response time (Tr) and product losses (Rp) by 80%.

The project focuses on temperature control, online measurement of product composition, and the complete digitalisation of the process. This will enable real-time adjustment of operating conditions, improving process efficiency, safety, and final product quality.

GiGa-3 will apply a Quality by Design approach and Process Analytical Technology (PAT), which are still uncommon in supercritical CO₂ processes, positioning BrudyTech as a benchmark in the transition towards Industry 4.0. The project will conclude with a fully digitalised pilot plant and a validated advanced control model, aligned with the objectives of the Recovery and Resilience Plan and the Public-Private Collaboration funding programme.

Leitat’s role in the project:

Leitat will act in the GiGa-3 project as a beneficiary partner.
