The battery researcher at Leitat, Bruno Marín Martínez, has provided an update on the latest advancements of ZABAT project, and the innovations in the Zn-Air batteries. As the final stages of the project approaches, key developments continue to shape the ZABAT’s outcome.
🔹 New materials development:
“We are approaching the final stage of the project, marking a significant milestone in our work. Regarding the anode, we have successfully developed a final formulation, which is a crucial step forward. However, we are now focusing on increasing the loading to further optimize its performance.”
“The cathode prepared by FhG is also performing well, demonstrating promising results in our latest tests. However, to fully meet the project’s final KPIs, we must adjust the amount of active material used in the design. This optimization is crucial to ensuring that the cell delivers the expected efficiency and stability. Encouragingly, the compatibility between the FhG cathode and the Leitat anode appears to be very strong, reinforcing our confidence in the system’s potential”
🔹 Cell design:
“In the past year, the project has made significant strides by successfully implementing a small-scale laboratory cell, which has shown excellent cycling performance and capacity. This achievement has paved the way for the next step: the design of the final cell. Currently, efforts are focused on creating a larger, more refined version of the cell, with a target area of 25 cm². This design must not only meet the required technical specifications but also optimize the materials and structure to ensure long-term stability and performance. With this final cell, the project aims to demonstrate the full potential of the Zn-Air battery technology, setting the stage for future applications in energy storage.”
🔹 Looking Ahead: The future of Zn-Air Batteries:
“This project is part of a growing wave of European initiatives aimed at advancing Post-Lithium technologies. These projects not only seek to improve energy storage solutions but also align with Europe’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and advancing sustainable energy alternatives. By investing in cutting-edge technologies like Zn-Air batteries, Europe is positioning itself as a leader in the development of clean energy solutions.”
“Looking beyond this project, companies such as AZA Batteries (EU) and E-Zinc (Canada) are also making significant progress in the development of Zn-Air batteries. These companies are expected to bring their Zn-Air batteries to market within the next one or two years, demonstrating the potential of this technology and reinforcing the growing momentum of Zn-Air as a viable, commercial energy storage solution. The fact that commercialization is just around the corner highlights the strength and potential of Zn-air technology, and we can expect to see it playing an increasingly important role in the global shift towards sustainable energy storage in the near future”
