HERACLES

Development of a complex secretome-based biological product for the regeneration of acute muscle injuries

Abstract:

The HERACLES project aims to develop an innovative therapy for the regeneration of muscle injuries, a highly common condition affecting the general population and particularly relevant in sports medicine and among older adults. The proposed solution is based on the use of the cellular secretome, a collection of bioactive factors with regenerative and anti-inflammatory properties capable of enhancing the natural healing process of muscle tissue.

The project’s main innovation lies in the encapsulation of the secretome into micro- and nanoparticles and its incorporation into injectable hydrogels, enabling controlled and localised delivery of the treatment. This approach improves product stability and efficacy, reduces the number of injections required, and enhances muscle regeneration compared with current therapies.

In this context, Leitat plays a key role by contributing its expertise in advanced materials and preclinical studies. Its work includes the development of the delivery systems (hydrogels), as well as the validation of the treatment’s efficacy and safety in both cell and animal models, supporting its future clinical application.

Overall, HERACLES represents a strong commitment to innovation in regenerative medicine, with significant potential to improve patients’ quality of life while contributing to the sustainability of healthcare systems.
