NOSHAN
Sustainable Production of Functional and Safe Feed from Food Waste
ABSTRACT
NOSHAN will investigate the process and technologies needed to use food waste for feed production at low cost, low energy consumption and with maximal valorisation of starting wastes. Nutritional value and functionality according to animal needs as well as safety and quality issues will be investigated and addressed as main leading factors for the feed production using food derived (fruit/vegetable/plant and dairy).
The achievement of the project objectives and results would bring companies a competitive advantage in the feed producing sector using wastes as co-streams. NOSHAN results should bring a reduction in cost of the final feed as well as production cost. Indeed it could also reduce the cost of feed additive and exert a positive impact on final feed product.
NOSHAN consortium will enforce the cooperation among SMEs, large industrial partners and research institutions.

The main focus of NOSHAN is to investigate the process and technologies needed to use food waste for feed production at low cost, low energy consumption and with maximal valorisation of starting wastes materials.
Nutritional value and functionality according to animal needs as well as safety and quality issues will be investigated and address as main leading factors for the feed production using food derived (fruit/plant and dairy). According to this not only wastes will be characterized for their nutritional potential, but suitable technologies to stabilize them and convert them into suitable raw materials for bulk feed will be researched.
LEITAT’s role in the project:- Project Coordinator
- WP 2: Food waste preliminary selection and selected food waste materials. Detection of heavy metals, Mould content and bacterial contamination. Suitability to waste transformation in feed products. Support on waste composition.
- WP4: Support in Development of a pre-treatment process capable of handling different waste sources, leader in Production of bioactive peptides from mixtures of protein-rich waste sources and their mixtures. Support In vitro modelling for assessing digestability and bioavailability. Management in the valorisation of residual fraction after recovery of feed additives.
- WP5: Support in bulk feed production, Additive premix design, Incorporation strategies of active principles and ingredients into final feed: microencapsulation, Final product safety assessment: physicochemical, microbiological and toxicological analysis.
- WP6: Support in Production of feed additives scaling up, Feed processing scaling up, Validation of the integrated food waste-to novel feed process and products.
