KLEBSIELLA

Development of new prevention and diagnostic tools for antibiotic-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae infections

Abstract: The project aims to advance the clinical development of K-Vax, a preventive vaccine against Klebsiella pneumoniae, and validate diagnostic tools to improve the clinical management of these infections.

K-Vax is designed to provide universal protection through the use of conserved outer membrane proteins, overcoming the limitations of current vaccines. The project will complete preclinical studies, determine the appropriate human dose, and finalise the product’s quality control methods.

The project also includes the development of rapid diagnostic tools: one based on mass spectrometry and artificial intelligence to detect colonisation and identify resistant strains; and another consisting of a microfluidic sensor capable of confirming active infections within minutes.

Together, these developments will help reduce antibiotic use, prevent severe infections, and improve clinical response. The project is aligned with the objectives of the Recovery and Resilience Plan, promoting innovation in healthcare and supporting the fight against antimicrobial resistance.

Leitat’s role in the project: The tecnological center will act as a beneficiary partner in the project.
