International Conference on Microplastic Pollution in the Mediterranean Sea (μMED)
Date: September 26–29, 2017
Location: Capri (NA), Italy
The μMED conference will address a critical source of marine pollution: microplastics. These plastic fragments, smaller than 5 mm, bypass wastewater treatments, accumulate in marine ecosystems, and pose significant risks to marine life, ecosystems, and human health. This event is organized as part of the LIFE13 ENV/IT/001069 – Mermaids project, which focuses on mitigating the microplastic impact from textile washing processes.
Key Themes
- Microplastics and the Marine Environment: Understanding their presence and behavior.
- Microplastics in the Mediterranean Sea: Specific focus on regional challenges.
- Sources of Microplastics: Identifying contributors, such as textiles and industrial waste.
- Degradation in Marine Environments: Exploring how microplastics break down (or don’t).
- Impact on Marine Life: Examining ecological consequences.
- Microplastics in the Food Chain: From marine pollution to human consumption.
- Socioeconomic Impacts: Evaluating the broader effects on society.
- Mitigation Strategies: Approaches to minimize their environmental footprint.
- Biodegradable Microplastics: Innovations in eco-friendly alternatives.
- Future Solutions: Proposals for sustainable action.
