The Horizon Europe project PUREPOLIS (Dynamic Abatement Strategies for Maximized Environmental and Societal Health in Cities) officially launched with its Kick-off Meeting held in Munich and hosted by Helmholtz Munich. The meeting brought together all consortium partners to align on the project’s objectives, governance structure, implementation roadmap, and upcoming technical activities.
PUREPOLIS aims to support healthier urban environments by developing innovative tools and strategies to identify, assess, and reduce pollution sources in cities, contributing to the European Zero Pollution ambition.
Within the project, Leitat leads Work Package 2, focused on the development of an AI-based near-real-time pollution source attribution tool integrating existing environmental monitoring systems. The work will support evidence-based decision making for local authorities and urban stakeholders by improving the identification and prioritisation of pollution sources.
In addition, Leitat will contribute to the development of practical guidelines for local authorities on the implementation of effective Zero Pollution Measures (ZPMs). The centre will also support replication and upscaling activities through collaboration with follower cities including Berlin and Augsburg, as well as through the organisation of dedicated replication and knowledge-transfer activities.
The Kick-off Meeting enabled partners to present their expertise, define coordination mechanisms, and establish the first operational steps for the project. Discussions during the meeting confirmed a strong technical alignment across the consortium and set the foundations for the successful execution of the project in the coming months.
The PUREPOLIS consortium is formed by partners from across Europe, including research centres, universities, public authorities, and technology organisations working collaboratively to address urban environmental health challenges through innovation and cross-sector cooperation.
Partners participating in the project include Helmholtz Zentrum München (Germany), Leitat (Spain), Universiteit Twente (Netherlands), UMIT TIROL – Die Tiroler Privatuniversität (Austria), Healthy Cities (Spain), European Public Health Alliance (Belgium), UNINOVA (Portugal), LUT University (Finland), TREE TECHNOLOGY SA (Spain), Substitute ApS (Denmark), UrbanThink.eu (France), Universidad de Vigo (Spain), EUROQUALITY SAS (France), Valencia Innovation Capital – Ajuntament de València (Spain), Nantes Métropole (France), Air Pays de la Loire (France), and Acoucité (France).
